Madly Pissed

Today, I had a funny experience. I sat in a bus in front of two elderly people; a man and a woman. They were both deeply engrossed in a conversation when I entered the bus and I could tell by the extra creases on their faces that they were really concerned about the subject matter.  The bus was relatively quiet as though everyone was politely listening to the conversation; which

Here, Hunger Commands

I do not even try to think about what the worst problem of this nation is. First, in order to do that, I’ll have to think of all the problems of the nation. It’s a very depressing activity. Also, the process of prioritizing our problems is a process bound to fail because, not only can one never list all the little problems in the nation, you may never also be

Stupid to Stupor

Having a thick skin is not as easy at it sounds especially when you’re a single lady in Nigeria.  Every day, I wake up to the reality that people would prejudge, offer unsolicited advice, interfere, even insult and try to intimidate me because of my single status BUT I must not blame them… They are only doing what they have learned; they know no other way.  I am 32 years

Yellow

Yellow is the colour I think about when I think of vomit (I don’t think of vomit a lot). But today, I was shocked to find that vomit can be of different colors. The big yellow sun that has begun to shine upon our black heads in Nigeria has got to be some sort of punishment. As early as 10am, we all are already sweating and frying and being cranky.

For Those Who Won’t Go…

I have been shouting ‘Exhibition’ ‘Exhibition’ since… Well, the first day of the exhibition came today and although it’s a week long (and there are other absolutely breathtaking art works at the venue/gallery) I know some people would not still visit.  So, here are the three works I exhibited and their interpretations.  Enjoy! Obinrin-birin    The word ‘Obinrin’ is Yoruba for ‘Woman’. On the finished work in the gallery, I

Re: Agege Bread

Prompt: Jan 27 Sliced Bread Most of us have heard the saying, ‘That’s the best thing since sliced bread!’ What do you think is actually the best thing since sliced bread. Dear Sir/Ma,  LETTER OF (FURIOUS) COMPLAINTS We are writing this letter with regard to the advert that was put up by your agency on the billboard on Admiralty way, Lagos, Nigeria.  We understand that the ads put up by

My 1984 Situation

Prompt: January 9 1984 You’re locked in a room with your greatest fear. Describe what’s in the room.   ‘Now, if you would turn with me to the book of Matthew, Matthew Chapter 10, we would be reading from verse 28’, my pastor’s voice rang through the auditorium. ‘Are we there?’ He said as he wiped the sweat from his face. ‘Yes Pastor!’ ‘Great. Now let’s read together. ‘And do

Road Trip 2014

So, in line with my ‘Impact Making 2015’, I decided to make a road trip travel to Cote D’ivoire for an AIESEC project. Initially, I was so sure I was going to fly my way there. This was basically because of the fact that any form of road travel depresses me. Even in the campus shuttle in school, I always count the seconds to my destination. And here was a

Itamapako

Itamapako School Village: Iloti. Town: Ijebu Ode. To be honest, the first time I heard the name of the school, I burst into laughter (although I think I was the only one who found it funny). I continued laughing until our Head Coordinator said, ‘We would not be able to teach the students any academic subjects. The principal asked if we have qualifications in Education and we don’t. So, we

Ebola Scare

Hello!! So, this is the last article in my writer’s prompt project. The last 13 write-ups have been great for me. And even though at some point I started writing off-point, every single article I wrote taught me a lot about myself as a writer. But that’s story for another day. Tomorrow is Ola-Gamaliel’s birthday!!!!! I just want to use this medium to say a little about Ola/Gama. Gama is
